Checker Ideas
Here are a few ideas for Update Checkers that have been given.
- Possibility to change default timer interval (5 minutes are to short, I would prefer 24 hours)
- Forum post checker
- Ebay price checker
- Find when a new item is added to Ebay
- Checker based on xpath that makes it easy to specific regions of a webpage
- Checker that finds new posts in communities/journals on livejournal.
- Option to save both filtered OldSource and filtered NewSource to file (allows the user to correct mistakes in filters)
- Ability to execute a command after successful validation of page change (ex. redirect to a new url)
- Ability to send an email when a page changes. EG when monitoring ticketmaster.com, it could email my cell phone (sending a text message) when tickets for a particular event go on sale.
PUC Features
Ideas to improve PUC.
- 2008-06-18 - support for Firefox 3?
- 2008-02-14 Please include the ability to assign alert sounds to entries individually. I have a few entries of mild interest, others that are of such vital importance they are worth getting out of bed for. I need the ability to tell the difference.
- 2007-03-08 Great tool! To make this "Beyond Awesome" here is my wishlist... 1) Ability to repeat the audio alert for user defined # of times, 2) Include e-mail alerts!!! (This would be great! as I'm often not by the computer when a change happens but do have cel phone). Thanks!
- 2006-11-18 Automaticaly open changed pages in new tab (especially on start up)
- 2006-09-18 Add ability for PUC to interact automatically with forms by saving form entries and submitting to get desired page to monitor. (e.g. load page 1, fill out the form boxes, "submit", receive page 2 and report whether page 2 is different from previous PUC form submit result)
- 2006-09-09 Add to Babelzilla to make localisation easy.
- 2006-09-06 Make PUC compatible with Bon Echo (Info: Works fine with Nightly tester tools)
- 2006-07-11 Option to remove PUC-Entry in Firefox extra menu (especially useful if you have many extensions installed - keeps Firefox more useable)
- 2006-04-29 Ability to export all PUC settings/checkers/watched pages/page data to a file and import them from a file.
- 2006-04-15 Option to set a default interval so the user doesn't have to change every entry from five minutes to their preferred interval.
- 2006-04-15 Option to only check on demand.
- 2006-04-13 Remember update notifications which the user has not dismissed. If firefox crashed or the user decided to close it before checking all the new updates, for example, the undismissed updates would persist upon the next load of firefox.
- 2006-04-13 Gray out disabled entries (like Greasemonkey does for disabled scripts).
- 2006-04-12 Option to only check when Firefox is started.
- 2006-03-28 Store Last-Modified timestamp from the HTTP header and only read whole page for the check if it has been updated since the previous check. Using HEAD to get the current timestamp and then a GET for the page if it has changed should improve performance.
- Add an option that lets you automatically reload a page when a change was identified.
- Make the checker properties be able sorted (so for example, filters could be applied in different orders)
- Make the checker properties have the ability to graphically interact with a webpage. This could make checkers more intuitive. (but might be tricky to implement)
- Integrate PUC into Firefox's bookmarks to consolidate and make things more transparent to the user. (A lofty request)
- It would make adding filters much easier if there was some way to view what PUC was actually seeing after the filters are applied. Right now, I have to modify a filter, then wait for the page to change to view the "what changed?" version of the page source and see if the regex worked or not.
- For the Yahoo! mail checker, parse for the tag 'cite' instead. It is used by the text of a button in the top-right-hand-corner of the screen. That button text changes (as does the button itself) to show if there is new mail. The current version (0.2) of the Yahoo! mail checker only works if you have a particular notifications module displayed - which I do not. This button I refer to is displayed no matter how you customize the content of the MyYahoo page. (submitted 01/11/06 by Matt L)
- Schedule checking by day of week, day of month, etc. (submitted 01/30/2006 by George D)
- In addition to the schedule checking (great idea), you could simply add "Days" to "Check Every:" (submitted 03/02/2006 by Alexandre L)
- First of all congratulations on a great extension. I used to use the Bookmark Notifier of Mozilla, although it was flaky, I found it very useful. Here are some ideas: The Dialog which notifies us when a page is updated is too convoluted. Most of the times all you want to do is to go to the page, don't do anything at all and maybe stop monitoring the page. Although you can do all of these from the dialog is is hard to do and main actions get lost. I would have 2 buttons: one cancel (or do not do anything), another one called "go to the page", when you click this one the dialog should go away. Optionally you can have a check mark which says stop monitoring the page. (feb 23, 2006 by Allen C.)
Completed Ideas:
- Open the changed page in new tab! not in a new window as 0.3 currently does. (completed in PUC 0.3 by means of the notification icon)
- Have option to open in new tab and not have the notification popup. (completed in PUC 0.3 by means of the notification icon)
- ~ help req: filter settings for keyword match. Anyone knows if it's possible with PUC to notify only when a certain string is found on a page? Preferably regexp, but static string would be fine too, ie. notify when there is "one legged" in page body. If it's not possible do you know any other extension for this? (completed in Find Expressions checker )
